The Rosarito Beach literacy ground “Rosarito’s Friends of the Library” is looking for new members and volunteers, according to a communique issued by this non-profit organization in the quaint Baja beach-front town.

Within the past year the Rosarito Friends of the Library have agreed to donate more than $2,000 worth of Spanish language children’s books to the local public libraries: they have donated more than $1,200 worth of library/art/craft supplies to the five libraries: they have sponsored children’s reading programs at the Plan Libertador and Primo Tapia public libraries, and have given prizes of new bicycles, skates, scooters, backpacks, books and school supplies to participants in the children’s reading programs.

On May 19, 2012 a new children’s reading program began at the Colonia Morelos public library for fifth and sixth graders. Student participants read about Mexican heroes and answer detailed questions about their readings, attended a D.A.R.E. drug resistance program, and will write a personal family history – while competing for exciting prizes.

How is this all possible?
It takes members - and some of those members volunteering some of their time. To continue these wonderful projects, and to expand them, the organization needs new members and more volunteers. Annual memberships are only $10 and are available from any FOL member or at International Mail Center in Oceana Plaza. Checks should be made payable to Shirl Koontz, the group’s treasurer and they can be mailed to Friends of the Library at 482 W. San Ysidro Blvd. #1130, San Ysidro, CA 92173.

The Friends of the Library meet on the second Wednesday of each month except December at the CEMAC public library (one block west of Boulevard Benito Juarez and Banamex) at 10:30 a.m. Everyone is welcome to attend, to become acquainted with the organization and to become involved with one or more of the children’s reading programs, the Chili/Frijoles Cook-Off fundraiser, the Holiday Home Tour fundraiser, used book sales or other charitable activities. The next meetings are June 13, July 11 and August 8: put those dates on your calendar and get started!

Get in on the pleasure of contributing to our community and enriching the lives of Rosarito kids: join the Friends of the Library, take part and make your life count! You will love it!
